Eyeliner Babydoll by YSL

photo 2 (4)

While shopping a few weeks ago for new makeup purchases, I ran into a sale on YSL products! For my makeup guru’s out there we know that this type of thing NEVER happens, so I took advantage of the “40% off everything must go sale” & purchased a few new items. One of the items was the YSL Eyeliner Babydoll in Light Blue #11  & I think that it is absolutely gorgeous! This liner is smooth in texture & the brush tip is very fine, making it easy to apply & perfect for winged liner.

No smudging. Very little flaking. Over all, I give it 4 out of 5 stars ****

Don’t Let it Fade

With SUMMER coming to a close & Fall just around the corner, your makeup routine might be changing, but don’t think that you have to relinquish that summer #glow that you spent all summer perfecting.

EXFOLIATE. First things first, in order to have healthy “looking skin” you must have healthy skin. Be sure that you are exfoliating regularly, at least 4-5 times per week. Exfoliating eliminates dry/flaky skin & cleans deep down into your pores to remove excess dirt & oils (which cause acne breakouts) that you don’t reach when hand washing. I like to use my Clarisonic to get a deep clean, especially after I remove my makeup.

MOISTURIZE. Next, make sure that you are moisturizing DAILY (Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream). You may use other products like serums & eye creams before your moisturizer but at minimum, you need to moisturize (even if you struggle with oily skin). Be sure to find a moisturizer that is going to work with your skin type. Gently massage & press your moisturizer into the skin & don’t forget your neck. Moisturizing leaves the skin hydrated & supple, this will help promote that natural glow.

ILLUMINATE & COVER. You are now ready for your foundation (Urban Decay’s Naked Skin #8.0). Choose a foundation that will set to a natural finish & preferably one that is medium coverage (I will explain why medium in just a min) . Try to stay away from foundations that dry to a matte finish, a foundation that is matte will eliminate the dewiness that we are aiming for. When I want a healthy natural glow but I still want coverage, I like to use an illuminator (MAC’s Strobe Liquid) that is thin in texture & I mix it right into the foundation. You could apply this directly to the skin after your moisturizer, but mixing will give the appearance that your glow is coming from within & not like you added it. Now, back to why I said a medium coverage foundation. When you mix your illumniator into the foundation it will immediately sheer down the foundation. If you were to use a foundation that was sheer in coverage, when you add your illuminator to the foundation & apply it to the skin there will be a minimum amount of coverage. If that is the look that you are going for then you are right on track, but I like to have just a little coverage when wearing foundation.

HIGHLIGHT. Now that you have gone through & taken care of the skin, don’t forget to brighten underneath those eyes (YSL’s Touche ‘Eclat Radiant Touch in #4). Brightening the under eye area will give you the appearance that you are well rested & make your eyes appear as though they have been lifted. Don’t be afraid to take you under eye highlighter & pull it to the upper plains of the cheek bones. This will lift the cheek bone & help it to stand out. Make sure that your under eye highlighter is not to light. Remember, you are going for a “natural” glow & sometimes if your under eye highlight is to light it can appear unrealistic.

POWDER. Finish off your foundation & under eye highlight with a loose sheer powder. Gently press the powder into the skin & under the eye. Be sure not to use heavy powders or full coverage powders. You want you skin to be the focus!

BRONZE. Lastly, find a bronzer that matches your skin tone (MAC’s Mineralized Skin Finish in Give Me Sun). If you have fair skin use a sheer rose/peach color bronzer. For ladies with olive skin tones try using sheer copper/earth tone colors. Ladies with deeper skin, use colors that are warm & rich, with subtle shimmer. When applying your bronzer, be sure to apply to the perimeter of the face (top & sides of the forehead, the hollows of your cheeks, jawline & neck) & not all over. Adding the bronzer to the perimeter of the face will create that beautiful sun-kissed glow.

Although summer is coming to a close, it doesn’t mean that your makeup can’t look like you are still living in the middle of June!

Fight Oily Skin with Calendula

photo (13) with logo

First things first, let me give you a tiny bit of background about Calendula before I get into my review…

Calendula a.k.a the Marigold, is a plant that can be used in many different ways & in different forms. When the herb extracts are used, this plant can be used for treating acne, reducing inflammation, soothing irritated tissue, promotes fast healing & regeneration of the skin which is why it is used so frequently when it comes to issues with the skin.

Like many of you I suffer with oily skin. Because I get so oily, I tend to get clusters of tiny little white heads in the center of my forehead, on my cheeks, around my nose & on my chin. I exfoliate daily with Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant & use my Clarisonic about 3 times per week but I still was seeing a major buildup of those nasty little comedones. One day after a facial, where she extracted those tiny white heads, I stopped by the Kiehl’s store to try out some new skin care products (facial cleanser, toner & moisturizer) & it was there that I was introduced to their Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash, Calendula Herbal- Extract Alcohol Free Toner & the Ultra Facial Oil Free Gel Cream.

By using all the 3 products together, 2x daily, over the past 2 weeks, I have really noticed a significant difference in my skin. I am not as oily as I was before, there isn’t a buildup of comedones, & my skin feels moisturized but not greasy.  My favorite part about my regiment is that each product is fragrance free so I don’t have to worry about allergic reactions or fragrance induced breakouts. The cleanser doesn’t leave my skin feeling tight or dry after washing & the toner is wonderful because it is alcohol free  which means it doesn’t burn! Once I am finished cleansing and toning I apply my moisturizer, which is also fragrance free, to damp skin. Applying it to damp skin allows the product to absorb into the skin for deep down hydration. Once I am finished, I apply my eye cream & call it a night. My face feels refreshed & revitalized which is an amazing feeling when you have faced the world all day.

Contouring & Highlighting at a Glance

photo (12)

Contouring & Highlighting can be tricky at times, but in this blog post, I have given you a quick guide on what areas of the face to contour & what areas to highlight. As you can see from the picture, the center of the face is where you want to concentrate your highlight & the perimeter of the face is where you want to do the majority of your contouring!

Natural Glowing Skin

This is what I am currently using when I want a natural glow. In this order…

1. MAC’s Strobe Lotion
2. MAC’s Lustre Drops
3. Benefits Hello Flawless Foundation in Hazelnut

After moisturizing I apply Strobe Lotion to most of my face focusing the majority of the product on my cheek bones.

Next I will go in with Lustre Drops and with my fingers add to the top of my cheek bones only.

Since I’m not a huge fan of liquid or cream foundations I tend to use them only in my problem areas (chin, around my mouth & on my cheeks) and blend down into my neck & behind my ears.

Once I have completed that, I go in with my concealer for under my eyes & lightly finish off with MAC’s Mineralized Skinfinish in Medium Deep. I use a small amount of powder so I can avoid a powdery finish. Remember, we want dewy natural looking skin.

6 Tips for Flawless Foundation

photo (9)

When your foundation is the wrong color or is applied incorrectly, there is no hiding it. In many different research studies it is said that 6 out of 10 women are applying their foundation incorrectly which can be just as bad as wearing the wrong shade. By following these 6 simple tips you will be applying your foundation like a pro in no time!

1. Use a Brush

Try using a dome shaped fluffy brush in light circular motions when applying your foundation ($35 MAC #109 Brush). Applying with this technique allows you to use less product but will also help to build coverage. Remember, it is always easiest to build product than to take off the excess.

2. Color Corrector’s (if needed)

If you have a deeper skin tone (tan to deep dark), you might often have some discoloration or pigmentation issues. If that is you, try using a color corrector that is orange in color. An orange based color corrector will help to cancel out dark purple/bluish undertones around the under eye & mouth area. ($6 NYX Dark Circle Concealer in Orange)

3. Prevent Creasing (as much as you can)

The bad news is that there really isn’t a way to stop products from creasing. However, the good news is that there are ways to help minimize creasing. First, be sure that if you have applied any  primer or creams to the areas that have fine lines (under the eye or around the mouth), that you blot away the excess product. The more emollient the skin, the more likely the product will crease. For lines around the mouth, go in with a small fluffy brush & remove any product buildup by buffing gently.

4. Mix & Match Formulas

Instead of loading the face with powder to get your foundation to stay put, try using a matte foundation ($36 Makeup Forever Mat Velvet +)  in the areas that tend to be oilier (typically the T-Zone) and using a dewier foundation around the perimeter of the face. Blend the matte foundation outwards to meet the dewier formula and gently marry the two together.

5. Use Highlighter before Foundation

Trying putting on your highlighter before you put on your foundation. This will give you a natural looking glow. With a matte full coverage foundation, throughout the day it can tend to look a little dull. Placing your highlighter underneath your foundation will help to give the skin a glow that looks as if it is coming from within.

6. Apply Foundation EVERYWHERE

Time & time again we have heard to blend your foundation below the jawline & into the neck but, there some other places that need some attention as well. Don’t forget to blend down onto the chest area if your chest is showing & if your chest is a different color than your face. Also, be sure to blend your foundation onto the ears and behind the ears as well. Sometimes on lighter skin complexions, ears can tend to be red so make sure to add a little foundation to your lobes & wherever else you see redness.
